A Brief History Of Aloe Vera In Medicine (And Natural Acne Skin Care)

The popularity of aloe vera as a natural remedy comes and goes. While it is not a universal cure-all, it does have proven healing properties. So much so that hospitals used it for burn treatments in the mid 1930s. Aloe vera proved itself very effective in reducing inflammation and healing wounds, exactly what someone suffering from burns needed. Unfortunately for the usage of aloe vera, the pharmaceutical establishment started mass producing cheap antibiotics like penicilin (discovered by Fleming in 1928) at the tail end of the 1930s. This sounded the death knell of aloe vera in hospitals.

However, now and again, aloe vera becomes popular as a cure-all among the common folk. My mother first brought home some plants for her herb garden more than two decades ago. Everyone she knew, all her friends, all our neighbors, were using it for cuts and scrapes. Given that aloe vera was so effective in reducing inflammation and healing wounds, you would think that people would use it as a natural acne remedy as well. Unfortunately, no one ever thought of it, more’s the pity.

It would have helped a lot of us kids back then. I wasn’t the only one suffering from acne and desperately looking for cheap and effective acne care treatment. Doctors and dermatologists were too expensive for many of us – we really needed affordable acne home remedies. If we had known, or thought to use aloe vera, at the very least, many of us would have ended up with far fewer acne scars.
